Introduction from Cllr Roderick Bluh, Leader
Thank you for your interest in this exciting and vital role. We hope that you find this information of interest and that it gives you a flavour of the opportunities and challenges which you will face.
We have ambitious plans to improve the quality of life for all people in Swindon. We want to develop a dynamic and thriving Borough by stimulating business innovation, learning, regeneration, culture and investment for the benefit of existing communities and in developing new areas of growth.
We are proud of what we have achieved so far in helping to stimulate regeneration and investment in Swindon’s central area. We have put together exciting development packages, which have created considerable interest in Swindon’s regeneration plans. We are in the process of delivering a range of public realm schemes including Canal Walk and Wharf Green schemes, and leading future schemes at Regent Street and the Station Forecourt. We are particularly proud of attracting Muse as the developer for the Union Square scheme.
All this demonstrates our desire to deliver outcomes for Swindon, for the town centre and the Borough wide economy, which are creative, cost effective and have high impact. By drawing on the support, experience and resources of the private sector in order to assist that delivery, we are working to ensure we meet the objectives as set out in our five year Business Plan, which is currently being developed and which the successful candidate will be expected to shape further during 2010. These objectives go beyond the physical regeneration of the town, and aim to bring about sustainable investment and economic regeneration of the whole Borough area as well as raise Swindon’s profile as a regional centre.
You will be involved in the establishment of a new Company, building on what has been achieved to date, and broadening the scope and impact for the people and communities of Swindon. You will be working with a new Board and must have the credibility to command their respect and the skills to help them develop into their roles – at the same time as establishing yourself in yours.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead and direct the regeneration and transition of Swindon, placing it on the national and international stage as a location open to inward investment. We are seeking someone who has the appropriate leadership and entrepreneurial qualities and the ability to gain the support of public and private sector investors and the local community to deliver success. This is a pivotal time to shape the future of Swindon and in the process make your mark.
If you are inspired by what we have already achieved and what we are seeking to achieve, and you believe that you have the skills and experience we are looking for, then we welcome your application.
Best regards
Councillor Roderick Bluh
Leader of Swindon Borough Council
